Hyungi

Hyungi was founded by Hyungi Park, a Korean American multi-disciplinary artist in 2019. Park works as an artist, incense maker, bookbinder, tattooer, and designer which all blends into the brand Hyungi. We share studio space with Goyo - a multi use space revolving around incense, tea, homeware, and workshops. Goyo also carries our handmade products and hosts our incense and bookbinding workshops. Hyungi’s work with incense has been featured in the New York Times, Architectural Digest, and has worked with MOCA, Viacom, Spotify, and she is a member of the NEW INC Creative Science Track.

exploring the craft of scent in their own distinct ways.

My background is in sculpture, so I like to get my hands on anything and everything. I have a studio and a shop called Goyo focusing on incense, and am starting to get into tea and home goods.

My relationship with scent primarily started from my background in sculpture. I was doing primarily performance art at the time, which got me thinking about rituals and components of a ritual, and specifically incense. So kind of how scent can really transport people to a place in time and also be very nostalgic, but also can hold such a spiritual kind of meaning or experience for people.

I love intimate moments, especially when there’s any subtlety, you just notice all the nuances, and I feel like this fragrance is a softer fragrance. Within the process and the fragrance, it's not meant to be very in your face, and I like that, how you can kind of just sit with it.

I like to watch incense, even though it's not the most dynamic but it can be, actually.

Hyungi Park, a Los Angeles-based artist, began learning how to make incense six years ago. She admits that incense isn’t necessarily the most eco-friendly option, compared with candles or essential oils, but thinks that it’s “definitely more for the mood.” The different functions of incense and the history behind it makes it special to her, especially because it is tied to religious ceremonies. “Incense feels more intentional,” said Ms. Park.
