Details

Created on a potter's wheel to evoke a narrower version of the Korean moon jar, this sculpted vase brings a contemporary twist to an ancient form. Its multicolored, textured surface is adorned with striking brown, cream, and blue tones, created by recycled clay scraps that slaked down and turned back into liquid clay. As Jotham Hung explained, the entire piece was composed of detritus from the making process (failed pots and pieces that didn't make the cut), as 'regeneration' is an ongoing theme in his work. This vase commands attention with its sculptural quality and rich texture. Every angle reveals something new, showcasing the recycled material's unpredictability and Hung's masterful reinterpretation of 'unusable' scraps.

Artist Notes

Jotham Hung

Fragments of broken pots, exploded pieces from the kiln, excess material from the making process—within these 'failures' and accumulation of 'waste', Los Angeles-based ceramicist Jotham Hung sees the opportunity to tell a story.

As a first-generation Taiwanese-American, incorporating ceramic remnants into the surfaces of Hung's work not only highlights the importance of regenerative practices but also the scarcity mindset imbued into the hearts of immigrant families. To deconstruct and reconstruct parts of a whole, originally seen as a means of survival, is now utilized to create emotionally evocative works that reflect the connection between life and art.

With his art pieces showcased in numerous museums and galleries across the United States, we are honored to work alongside Jotham to offer pieces with beautifully humble origins and intended for everyday use.

Product Care

Ceramic pieces can be unglazed, partially glazed, or fully glazed. Each application requires a slightly different approach to caring for the piece.

While most ceramics are dishwasher-safe, we recommend handwashing to maximize the piece's longevity.

It is best to wash after each use. Lukewarm water and a mild detergent will do, but for a hardier stain, you can use gentle cleansing products like Bon Ami.

For woodfired work, if you regularly clean your piece with harsh soaps or in the dishwasher, it might start to look visibly dry. In this case, apply a small amount of mineral oil to your hands and rub the surface of the piece to regain its luster.

The porosity of unglazed clay bodies can retain large amounts of moisture and harbor bacteria. Avoid soaking the piece in water for extended periods, as this can lead to discoloration, odor, and mold growth.

Most hand-thrown ceramic wares are left with an unglazed foot. If rough to the touch, use 220-grit sandpaper to polish until smooth.

Refrain from sliding the piece across surfaces to help avoid scratches on furniture.

Wipe the piece with a soft cloth after washing, and dry on a dish rack overnight before storing.
