Details

The beauty of these netted stones lies in their simplicity. Inspired by Japanese basket weaving and the art of Mizuhiki (intricate knotwork introduced to Japan during the Asuka period by a Chinese envoy), each rock is woven as a part of Janet Jay's meditative practice. Subtle feelings such as solidarity, unity, and compassion surface when holding one of these stones—concepts that are otherwise difficult to express without words. We love the idea of giving one of these stones as a gift.

Artist Notes

Janet Jay

The former head of marketing for Diane von Furstenberg and Estée Lauder in New York—and one-half of the creative partnership behind Portland-based Studio J—Janet Jay is a strong believer in the pure and nourishing power of continuous care.

Born in New York City, Jay learned and inherited the ancient traditions and beauty regimens of Eastern culture from her grandmother, who was born in China. Jay's interest in life's rituals eventually led her to Portland, Oregon, where she began Pearl+ Luxury Soaps, a brand that incorporates ancient ingredients of activated charcoal and crushed pearl powder and that was carried by Ace Hotel locations worldwide, and Golden Hour, a daily acupuncture and wellness studio that optimizes traditional Chinese medicinal practices for daily life.

Through community building and holding space for like-minded thinkers, Jay hopes to change the ideals around health in modern society—that wellness should no longer be a reaction to ailments, but rather a daily act of self-love.

Product Care

Stones of various types are naturally porous and will show age on their surfaces over time. If you prefer to maintain the rock's original surface, minimal handling is advised, as oils from your skin can seep into the surface.

Dust stone sculptures regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth or a gentle brush. For deeper cleaning, use a pH-neutral, non-acidic stone cleaner.

Avoid vinegar, bleach, and abrasive scrubbing pads, as these can etch the surface or strip the sealers/finish on polished stones.

For sekimori-ishi stones, the degradation of their wrapped rope/cord is considered part of their transient beauty. If you wish to maintain your wrapped stone's original condition, keep it indoors and away from wet environments.
