Details

In the 90s, it was still customary for grandparents to scrape together enough money to gift a newborn a silver rattle or spoon, so this piece is quite nostalgic for us! Perfect as a dessert spoon or baby's first spoon, the gentle curves of the handle, combined with the satin-smooth finish, make this sterling silver piece great for daily use or as a special gift.

Artist Notes

Sara Thompson

Since moving across the country at sixteen to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts, Portland-based metalsmith Sara Thompson has been drawn to the act of transforming one-dimensional pieces of material into objects for daily use.

With a professional career spanning well over ten years, Sara’s wide range of household and art objects showcase the depth and scope of her mastery over her material. Through waves of meticulous hammering and shaping, each piece slowly reveals the effortless beauty and organic symmetry that characterizes her work.

Despite her impressive achievements in silversmithing, Sara works tirelessly in her North Portland studio (an artist collective started by her prior OCAC mentor), constantly striving to push the boundaries of her work.

Product Care

If the piece comes into contact with moisture before cleaning, wipe it away with a soft cloth. Long-term exposure to moisture or storing food inside for extended periods may cause the piece to darken.

Specialized cleaners or polishing cloths can help restore the original shine on unlacquered metals.

If the piece is lightly dirty, rinse it under lukewarm water using a soft sponge.

If there are oily areas, instead of solely lukewarm water, use a mild dish detergent and a soft sponge to gently clean the piece. For a natural cleaning solution, try acidic liquids such as lemon juice or a mixture of half a glass of vinegar and a teaspoon of salt.

Do not use metal scrubbing pads or knives directly on the metal piece, as this could cause unnecessary scratching and dulling of the surface.

After rinsing, fully dry the piece with a soft cloth. Leave the piece out to dry on a dish rack overnight before storing.

Unlike Copper, which is easily eroded, the darkening of Aluminum is the result of a natural chemical occurrence formed to prevent corrosion. This form of oxidation is harmless from a food hygiene perspective.
