Details

There’s a certain ease that comes with having these rattan baskets around the home—sturdy, functional, and always there when we need them. Inspired by Shaker 'cathead' baskets, named after the bottom corners that resemble cat ears, each piece is densely woven for durability yet feels incredibly lightweight. Plus, rattan's natural antimicrobial properties make it an excellent choice for food-related uses.

Note: Each basket may have up to half an inch of dimensional variance due to the hand-making process.

Artist Notes

Underwater Weaving Studio

Heavily influenced by the weaving techniques of New England Shaker communities and the indigenous Wabanaki, Underwater Weaving Studio is a basket atelier rooted in rediscovering the traditional craft of basket making.

Baskets have always been coveted for their simple forms and durable construction, and while the Shakers made it their mission to honor proper use, seek tight form, and eliminate the unnecessary, Erin and Peggy Pollard (the mother-daughter team behind Underwater Weaving) have created a philosophy of incorporating modern design sensibilities without succumbing to excess.

Splitting time between their homes in New York and Maine, Erin and Peggy carry on the tradition of practical simplicity embodied in the Shaker style.

Product Care

Rattan is known for its strength and durability, and smoked rattan, in particular, is even more resistant to mold and mildew than raw rattan.

To care for your rattan basket, use a dry microfiber cloth, a feather duster, or a soft brush vacuum attachment to remove dust and loose dirt.

Avoid soaking your rattan piece in water, as it can strip away natural oils or permanently stain the smoked finish. If you must remove a spot, use a lightly damp cloth with a tiny drop of mild dish soap, wiping in the direction of the weave. Make sure to wipe dry.

Keep the basket in a climate-controlled room and away from direct sunlight or heating sources, which can fade the color and dry out the fibers.

Rattan is a flexible plant fiber, so slight sagging or widening of the basket walls may occur over time. To correct this, dampen the sides of the basket with water using a spray bottle, reshape/compress the sides inwards, and let the basket dry in its adjusted shape.
