Details

The beauty of these stones lies in their simplicity. Often used in gardens and temples, Sekimori Ishi are boundary stones meant to define a path as closed or off-limits. They have long been an example of the Japanese tradition of communicating through subtlety and gesture. When wrapped in rope and placed on a path, these stones exemplify the Japanese tradition of communicating through subtlety and gesture. Simple, modest, and heavy with unseen meaning, we love these small stones both for their intended use and simply as objects to hold and admire.

Artist Notes

Janet Jay

The former head of marketing for Diane von Furstenberg and Estée Lauder in New York—and one-half of the creative partnership behind Portland-based Studio J—Janet Jay is a strong believer in the pure and nourishing power of continuous care.

Born in New York City, Jay learned and inherited the ancient traditions and beauty regimens of Eastern culture from her grandmother, who was born in China. Jay's interest in life's rituals eventually led her to Portland, Oregon, where she began Pearl+ Luxury Soaps, a brand that incorporates ancient ingredients of activated charcoal and crushed pearl powder and that was carried by Ace Hotel locations worldwide, and Golden Hour, a daily acupuncture and wellness studio that optimizes traditional Chinese medicinal practices for daily life.

Through community building and holding space for like-minded thinkers, Jay hopes to change the ideals around health in modern society—that wellness should no longer be a reaction to ailments, but rather a daily act of self-love.
