Details

Handbuilt on a potter's wheel, I love how this otherwise simple bowl comes alive the closer you inspect its surface. Though it has a classic shape with its flared rim, the magic of the material comes alive in the metallic specs featured throughout the matte black glaze. Embracing the 'serendipitous' in pottery is what Marité Acosta is known for, making the piece even more poetic in all its organic imperfections.

Artist Notes

Marité Acosta

Spanning a career in fashion, textiles, food, and ceramics, Cuban-American artist Marité Acosta (pronounced MAR-a-TAE) has transitioned between artistic mediums with an enviable seamlessness.

The subjective nature of art, aesthetics, and function is central to Marité’s work. Each piece she creates is made with intention and leaves behind traces of human touch. With a strong balance of function and form, her work never aims to seek out perfection but to celebrate the unexpected outcomes of the material.

After living in NYC for more than 30 years, Marité now lives in Bend, Oregon, where she embraces her creative practice in clay full-time.

You can find Marité's work featured in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Bon Appétit, Remodelista, and numerous other magazines, lifestyle books, and cookbooks.

Product Care

Ceramic pieces can be unglazed, partially glazed, or fully glazed. Each application requires a slightly different approach to caring for the piece.

While most ceramics are dishwasher-safe, we recommend handwashing to maximize the piece's longevity.

It is best to wash after each use. Lukewarm water and a mild detergent will do, but for a hardier stain, you can use gentle cleansing products like Bon Ami.

For woodfired work, if you regularly clean your piece with harsh soaps or in the dishwasher, it might start to look visibly dry. In this case, apply a small amount of mineral oil to your hands and rub the surface of the piece to regain its luster.

The porosity of unglazed clay bodies can retain large amounts of moisture and harbor bacteria. Avoid soaking the piece in water for extended periods, as this can lead to discoloration, odor, and mold growth.

Most hand-thrown ceramic wares are left with an unglazed foot. If rough to the touch, use 220-grit sandpaper to polish until smooth.

Refrain from sliding the piece across surfaces to help avoid scratches on furniture.

Wipe the piece with a soft cloth after washing, and dry on a dish rack overnight before storing.
