Resulting from days of crushing, sieving, dehydrating, and wedging locally harvested wild clays, this jar feels as if it were shaped with natural ease. Its deep, encrusted surface, almost reminiscent of a Takotsubo (Japanese 'octopus pot') left to rest on the ocean floor, creates a dynamic balance that complements its rounded shape. What really makes this piece stand out is how it captures light and shadow on its surface. The overall form feels bold, yet there’s a softness to the way it holds space, balancing the ruggedness of the material with a subtle elegance. With a presence that feels both grounded and sculptural, this jar has an undeniable warmth, inviting you to discover its unique details from every angle.

Mie Kim

Emptiness and rough edges, asymmetry and functionality, expansion and rootedness: Mie Kim's work is an exploration of balance in aesthetic contradiction.

Inspired by the traditional arts of her native Seoul, Korea, and the indigenous crafts of Quebec, Canada, where she currently resides, her practice melds form and ritual with the imperfection of presence and spontaneity. Each object is as influenced by her roots as it is by her natural surroundings—she collects and integrates indigenous organic materials, such as tree ash and harvested wild clay, into her pieces—seeking to reclaim an ascetic intentionality in an era of perceived abundance.

Mie Kim's work can be found internationally in galleries across Canada, the UK, Japan, Seoul, and the United States.

Product Care

Ceramic pieces can be unglazed, partially glazed, or fully glazed. Each application requires a slightly different approach to caring for the piece.

While most ceramics are dishwasher-safe, we recommend handwashing to maximize the piece's longevity.

It is best to wash after each use. Lukewarm water and a mild detergent will do, but for a hardier stain, you can use gentle cleansing products like Bon Ami.

For woodfired work, if you regularly clean your piece with harsh soaps or in the dishwasher, it might start to look visibly dry. In this case, apply a small amount of mineral oil to your hands and rub the surface of the piece to regain its luster.

The porosity of unglazed clay bodies can retain large amounts of moisture and harbor bacteria. Avoid soaking the piece in water for extended periods, as this can lead to discoloration, odor, and mold growth.

Most hand-thrown ceramic wares are left with an unglazed foot. If rough to the touch, use 220-grit sandpaper to polish until smooth.

Refrain from sliding the piece across surfaces to help avoid scratches on furniture.

Wipe the piece with a soft cloth after washing, and dry on a dish rack overnight before storing.

Return Policy

Returns for store credit are accepted within 7 days of receipt or delivery. All valid returns must be in unused condition with attached tags and original packaging.

For online orders, Storied Objects will not accept any returned merchandise without prior written communication and a valid return authorization number. Upon inspection of the returned item, store credit will be provided minus a 10% restocking fee; no refunds.
