Designing on the principle that 'form follows function,' the decidedly practical ceramicist Kati Von Lehman makes work she describes as simple and useful. Based in Portland, Oregon, Von Lehman creates minimal pieces that focus on fulfilling a purpose while also leaving room for the tactility of the material to shine through. Her most practical decision was to shift careers from interior design to ceramics after she had a baby. With a potter's wheel in her basement, ceramics was an easy medium to adopt with limited space and needing to care for a newborn. Almost a decade later, Von Lehman continues to operate solely from her home studio, focusing on producing tableware collections for restaurants and wineries worldwide.
