Both/And | Matthew Abadi Exhibition Recap

Setting up Both/And was a thrilling challenge for us, as it involved clearing the gallery of all fixtures, allowing Abadi's retrospective of work to shine. Showcasing over a hundred glass pieces in a minimalist yet expressive arrangement, the gallery took on an entirely new feel.

Matthew Abadi personally assisted with the installation, attended the opening reception, and even created additional wood displays for his work, blackened using the traditional Japanese method of Shou Sugi Ban. Seeing the full range of styles and sizes in one setting was mesmerizing and emphasized the variety within Abadi's work.

A standout installation was the wall of Ripple Cups, a series that Abadi has been experimenting with for years. This simple cup's design came in three sizes (sipper, wine, and water), each hand-blown and moulded to have a uniquely fluid rim, exemplifying Abadi's mastery in creating quietly organic pieces.

The exhibition also featured a new series of table lighting: the Pebble Lamp. Inspired by smooth river rocks, the base is blown, cut, and textured by hand to achieve its 'non-glassy' surface.

A highlight of the opening weekend was the sheer number of people in attendance, ranging from longtime friends and avid collectors to shop regulars and fellow craftspeople. The event was a reunion centered around the celebration of Matthew Abadi's friendship and work.

Stay tuned as we continue to follow Abadi's creations in the future. Until then, you can browse his rotating collection of work here.
