Artist Notes
Carson Culp has a simple goal: to craft honest and essential ceramics using traditional glazes and hand-throwing techniques. Having attended artist residencies at Leach Pottery and the Mashiko Museum for Ceramic Art, his work combines the organic and subtle beauty of English studio pottery and Japanese folk craft (Mingei.) Using a variety of decorating techniques, such as glaze trailing, wax resist, repeat brush-stroke patterns, and spoon glazing, Culp embellishes his forms as if a blank canvas. With thousands of hours behind the potters' wheel, every piece that comes out of Culp's Portland-based studio stands out for its simplicity, versatility, and beautiful functionality.
